For my daughter's second birthday, I wanted something gender-neutral, but fun for kids of all ages. I came up with "Bubbles and Balloons." I made invitations out of
colored paper, with a silhouette of a house rooftop and balloons floating into the sky and craft jewels to look like bubbles.
It read "Bubbles and balloons and friends like you...please join us as Leah turns TWO!" Decorations were easy -- TONS of balloons. I rented a helium tank and blew up a lot of balloons the night before, figuring they would likely deflate a bit by the next day. They did, and those were the "bubbles" just all around the house on the floor. The day of the party, we inflated many more balloons that stayed up -- they were all over the house and outside as well. For food, it was everything round. Snacks included puffy cheese balls, a cheese ball with round crackers, all kinds of those chocolate covered round candies such as the York peppermint and Resees chocolate balls, sour balls, etc. There was a fruit salad that consisted of balled fruit, too. Three round cakes -- different flavors -- were decorated to look like balloons with ribbon coming out of the bottom of each. For games, I found some cute bubble blowing toys on clearance that were like faces with a gel-type face filled with water. There were many colors, so the kids could choose what they wanted, then we all went outside and they blew bubbles. There was also a "pop the balloon" game. I had purchased a bunch of $1 gift certificates from places like McDonalds, Dairy Queen, etc., rolled them up and stuck one in each of the balloons as I blew them up. The children all took turns picking out a balloon and popping it to see what prize they received. We also had the expected pinata and pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey game, although with the latter we used "pin the bubble on the wand." I got a large poster board and cut out a bunch of different colored and different sized bubbles, in addition to making a picture of a large bottle of bubbles with a wand. The kids picked their bubble and tried to get it on the wand. Goody bags included the bubble faces and bottle of bubbles, the gift certificate inside the balloons, special mylar balloons from the party, and other toys such as balls and other round things. Everyone had a good time and the weather was perfect. We got many compliments on the unique theme -- a simple idea, easy to do, with lots of room for creativity!
