This was a Jungle Safari with a scavenger hunt. It was great!
I started with taking my sons picture at the local Arboretum. There was on shot that I took of him looking through binoculars, out into and heavily wooded area, and there happened to be a mister going on at the same time. It looked like he was looking out into a misty forest. I put that pic as the background of the invitation, which was a postcard. On top of the picture I formatted the information as if everyone was invited to our converatory" where we would be researching endangered species. For decorations I spray painted white craft paper black and green at the front door i put another tree with lights and printed out a sign that welcomed guests' saying "It's Nolan's Jungle in Here! Welcome!" For the scavenger hunt: I used brown paper bags and fashioned yarn at the corners so that the kids could wear the bags over thier shoulders like satchels. I made the yarn long enough so that they could also read the map while they were hunting. I made a map using general pictures of what they were hunting but also making it look official as if it were old and rugged. I crumbled up each map and then rubbed brown and yellow chalk to make it look dirty and old. The I used eyelets to attach it to the bag. for one of the hunt items I purchased those water pills that have the animal shapes in them. At craft stores you can get a package of about 12 for 1 dollar. I put 2 in a tiny cello bags and printed out directions on how to get the animals to come out for each package. I put the directions on the back and then on the front I put "endangered larve" on it. Another hunt item using more small cello bags (you can find them in the jewerly section of most craft stores) was gummy worms. This one looked so real! Other items were magnifying glasses camo hats and glow braclets. (we called those glow worms) Finally the last picture on the map was a lady bug. And on the last scavenger hunt table the kids saw a little box and when they opened it...live lady bugs came out. It was on a cold day so they didn't fly away. This was litteraly the hit of the party...they all got thier magnifying glasses and began studying them! I would suggest doing this away from the door though! We started seeing those little critters inside the house...and I was very nervous to start a colony in my home! For the cake I did an awesome diarama of a jungle in the back of a deep pizza box. I glued the top to the side so that it stood up. And after cleaning it I printed a jungle picture off of the internet and glued it to the back of the part standing up inside the box. I lined the entire box with green paper. I also lined the front sides with green cut up construction paper to look like grass. Then I made about 3 palm trees from construction paper and tissue rolls. I also had some eyelash yarn that was brown and yellow and hung that over the top of the inside part of the box. I got stickers of bugs and put those all over the outside of the box. For the "cake" part I made pudding mud cups. Pudding gummy worms and oreo cookie topping. I was able to put about 13-15 inside the box and then had more on a tray handy. The goody bag was there scavenger hunt satchels. It was probably one of the best planned parties I have done! Everyone seemed to enjoy every part of it! I even got the "this is the best party ever" phrase from my 5 year old! "
