10th birthday, mad science party. I organized a mad science birthday party for my son's 10th party, the invitations were made to look like test tubes, I cut out 2 test tube shapes out of white
cardboard, and placed a green carboard oozing out, that part was the invitation, it said, We just found out the formula for a great birthday party - you! Come on over to Ryan's science party
on date, time, address... please advise the lab supervisor at phone number and placed a small map that I printed out on the back (there were new kids coming). My mom made each child a lab
coat, I found fabric at 1.95 a meter and bought a simple lab coat pattern. I also got safety glasses to put on. for decoration I painted a huge cut out of a mad scientist and a funny looking
blob, out of a plastic board, I cut out the face part of the scientist and the blob, and painted Ryan's 10th birthday on the top to look like electricity. As the kids came in they put their
faces in the holes with the birthday child, this was to be used as thank you cards, to give out. After the kids put on their lab coats and glasses and it was time for the first experiment:
Red Cabbage, boil the cabbage for half an hour and let cool (do this the night before, because it stinks)The kids put the cabbage juice in the test tubes that I bought from
www.stevespanglerscience.com, and then mix base or acid liquid to make the color change, I use: milk, lemon juice, 7up, oil, drink mix, liquid soap... they had fun and occupied them for half
an hour. Next came the Insta-snow, also bought on the steve spangler site, the kids got to make snow, they loved this. The third experiment was to make a cartesian diver, again bought from
Steve Spangler. the Cartesian diver is cleverly disguised as a colorful squid affectionately called SQUIDY. Squeeze the plastic soda bottle and SQUIDY swims up and down in the bottle of
water. Children can't help but ask, "How does that work?" I then explain it and they each make one to bring home with them. Then was time for cake and snacks, the cake was an
erupting volcano, I got the recipe from www.disk-o.com, it's just a dome like cake and cut out a whole in it and place a shot glass with baking powder in it... then mix equal parts of jell-o
(prepared as directed) and lemon juice, when ready pour it in the hidden shot glass and voila, it's erupts. I also made jell-o in a brain mold and had chips and ham ball with crackers and
pop. We then open the gifts and the kids had just about enough time to play a little before the pick up time. For decorations, I had put green streamers all around and I had cut out green
cardboard like slime dripping from the ceiling all over also, and I used plastic gloves for balloons, which I had also put outside on the porch. As the guests arrived my son would say, sorry
about the slime, I had a little accident in the lab, but please come in. The goody bags were brown lunch bags decorated with the same green slime and their names on it, inside was a
illuminated ball, a sample of insta-snow, candies and of course, squidy. All in all it was a huge success.
