The Weird Science Party for our 5-year-old was a HUGE hit! Invitations were a downloaded Einstein photo (the one where he's sticking out his tongue) with text "You don't have to be Einstein to figure it out / Having some fun is what it's really all about! / But you just might learn something while you are here / As we start the beginning of (child's name) 5th year!" I printed invites & directions to the "laboratory" (our house) on 8x11 graph paper; business-size envelopes had a microscope (downloaded clip art) printed on the bottom left corner; I used R. Buckminster Fuller postage stamps (ordered from USPS website). A dressed male mannequin ("Dr. Strangelove") was on our front porch, sporting horn-rimmed glasses with white tape, lab coat, & a sign asking guests to come on in if we didn't hear the doorbell. The birthday boy, sporting his eyeglass frames, lab coat, and spiked hair, greeted his guests.  The kids colored sciences-themed (chemistry, biology, geography, technology) coloring sheets (B&W clip art) or played with the plasma-ball light atop a silver mylar-paper (clearance Christmas wrap) covered small table. Mad Science provided entertainment - our scientist was FANTASTIC; his demonstrations mesmerized 29 kids & 35 adults for over an hour! The kid-friendly lunch buffet was set up on the kitchen island.  A lime green plastic tablecloth & draped silver tissue-lame fabric buffet area featured: 2 large glass containers of blue-colored water & dry ice, with clear plastic tubing between the containers, lava lamps (cut small slits in plastic tablecloth to hide cords), funnels, small toy globes, crystals, toy rockets, telescopes, slinkys, & plastic beakers of space slime, cobalt-blue serving pieces, a specimen cup for eating utensils, mortar & pestals for condiments, & two large beakers (1000 ml-size) of limeade. The cake was a 9x13 cookie, frosted dark blue with various-size dots of white frosting for stars.  I made a big cake in a glass bowl, a few "regular" size cupcakes, and several "mini" cupcakes.  I cut the rounded tops off all cakes/cupcakes, frosted the tops various colors, and placed the cake "planets" all over the cookie "galaxy". I cut a Saturn ring from colored craft foam & placed it around the biggest cake.  I used a drinking glass cut a crescent-shape from the leftover cake & frosted it white for a moon.  Goody bags were lime-green lunch sacks, tied shut with blue curling ribbon & Einstein's photo printed on card stock for a small nametag. They contained:  science-shapes gummy candy, alien eraser, compass, plastic beaker of space slime, magnifying glass.  I got the goody bag supplies from Oriental Trading Co. and US Toy & Novelty, except for the gummy candy, which I found at Dollar General Store. Thank-you notes were an enlarged photo of the R. Buckminster Fuller postage stamp and accompanying text from USPS website, printed on card stock.  E=mc2!
