For my son's 8th birthday this year we had a mad lab party. I made the invitations on the computer using a four-fold format. On the front I put a picture of Albert Einstein with his
tongue stuck out and above the picture it said you are invited to the mad lab. It was printed in a waky font. On the inside it had the specifics of the party. We had it in the banquet room of
the Best Western.
At the party we did three experiments. I had my friend dress up like sceintist in a lab coat with goggles and a pocket protector and he walked the kids through the experiments. He spoke in a funny accent that made all the kids laugh. The first was about chemical reactions. The professor talked about acids and bases and how chemical reactions occur. We made magic potions out of baking soda and vinegar. I put the soda in a 50 ml flask (which i purchased off the internet)ahead of time. The kids were amazed when the potion bubbled out of the flask. Next we learned about mixtures.the professor talked about the two parts of a mixture. I purchased test tubes from stevespangler.com (neat site) and had the kids make dia-look (kool-aid). I put the kool aid powder in ahead of time and had the kids add the water with droppers. Then we played music and had them shake up the test tubes until the kool aid was dissolved. Then they got to drink it. For the last experiment learned about suspensions. We made oobleck (cornstarch and water). The professor then talked about the properties of the oobleck and why it looked like a liquid but felt like a solid. They got to take the oobleck home with them. We had pizza and ice cream and cupcakes. We served the juice in plastic beakers and the cup cakes on plastic petri dishes. For the party bags I got plastic specimen bags from the doctor's office i work at and filled them with a test tube, a dropper, a water yo-yo ball, a magnifying glass, UV beads, kaileiscopes, glow rings and candies. We decorated the room to look like a lab. I put black vinyl cloths on the tablesto make them look like lab counters and different scientifc posters on the walls. Each child had a lab station that contained a name badge and all the equipment needed for the experiements and goggles. I ordered body parts from steve spangler science and put them in jars to look like specimens and used tubing and small air pumps to make bumbling potions. All the kids thought it was the best party the had ever been to. The parents said it was great to incorporate learning into a birthday party.
