For my son's 5th birthday party he wanted a Weird Science theme. This was too much fun! The invitations were magic lab beakers. I cut the beaker pattern out of clear report covers and taped
the sides and bottom with clear tape and using a black marker made measurement marks down the front. Then I cut one layer of the same beaker shape out of red or blue clear report covers. On
the computer I made the invitation saying "Ooze on over to Arthur's secret lab for a Weird Science Birthday Party!" I printed the words in red or blue (to match the color in the
beaker)including the details. I put the red or blue plastic in first and the white paper with the words behind it so you couldn't read it . When you pull the white paper up you can read the
invitation (idea from Family Fun Magazine).
I purchased all kinds of cheap lab beakers; test tubes etc. from a site on the internet for the decorations and take homes. I used the Jimmy Neutron plates, napkins etc and used clear plastic cups which I made measurement marks with a black marker to look like beakers. I printed all kinds of signs from the internet like; Radioactive, Caution, Biohazard etc. and hung them around the room. I also made a sign for the front door saying Warning: You are now entering Arthur's secret lab, enter at your own risk! When the children arrived I had them all decorate big neon poster board bowties with stickers and put on their lab coats which I purchased on eBay. White disposable lab coats which I cut down to fit the kids. They also had name tags made out of Popsicle sticks with Prof. Arthur, Dr. Zach, Ashley MD etc. I provided them with big round glasses and mustaches to wear. When they were all dressed we took their picture in front of the big Periodic Table of Elements chart on the wall. We hired the Mad Science Company to send a scientist that did all kinds of fun experiments for the kids and let them make their own slime. I filled all the beakers and test tubes with bright green and blue neon colored Kool-Aid (Mad ScienceTwist flavors) then added some dry ice so they all bubbled and smoked. The cake was a volcano which I made by stacking 2 or 3 8" round cakes and baked two in dome shaped Pyrex dishes all stacked and then trimmed to look like a mountain. I frosted it in two brown tones and sprinkled it with crushed chocolate graham crackers. I used Fruit Roll Ups for the blue water around the volcano and red down the side and around the top to look like lava and green and yellow for the trees and foliage. I also used rock candy, gummy sharks and dinosaurs. I cut a hole in the very top where I put a small dish. When it came time to light the cake I placed 5 sparklers around the top and put dry ice in the cup. I lit the sparklers and poured hot water on the dry ice to make the smoke. It looked really cool! The kids all got to keep their lab coats, bow ties and glasses, the slime they made, and their treat box which was a little lab box I found at the dollar store and in it I put science stickers, Mad ScienTwist Kool-Aid packet, Laffy Taffy, test tubes, magnifying glass, notepad and pen, Pop Rocks, Nerds, Petri dishes with pipettes and a little Totally Gross-Out Experiments book that I made on the computer which had 6 different experiments they can try at home like Ooze, Slime, Moldy Bread, Gross Germs etc. It was a very fun party and all the kids had a great time!
