Summer Sleepover Bash

2nd Runner-Up

Sept. 2000

At my all girl summer bash birthday sleepover party, I used some really cool ideas that are cheap, fast, simple, and fun. Here Are My Tips 1. For invitations, use scraps of cloth, a permanent marker, and cotton balls to make pillow invitations. Or use glitter, sequins, colored tissue paper, and magic markers to decorate a white piece of paper. Make sure to write down date, time, location, and things to bring (CD's, sleeping bags, bathing suits) on card. Send invitations out two weeks in advance.   2. In preparing for a party, a daily planner comes in handy. Write down to-do lists, a shopping list, lists of games to play, and a list of guests. It's stress-free to be organized. For the party, you'll need basic elements...food, games, decor, and friends.  3. For party food you should have a lot of sweet stuff and junk food, but keep a few healthy snacks on hand, like apple slices, carrot sticks, corn on the cob, etc. For the main chow, order a few pizzas, but if you want to be adventurous, you can order pizza toppings like pineapple or bacon bits (with guests consent!). For another great variation on the mundane, have guests make small homemade pizzas by having them knead and shape dough, spread tomato sauce over it, and decorate it with pepperoni slices, black olives, mushrooms, and shredded mozzarella cheese. Bake in oven till well browned.  Or it's even fun to have your party-goers make their own sundaes. Give them dishes of vanilla ice cream and lay out sprinkles, sauces, bits of cookie, pieces of candy, and other ice cream toppings on table...then stand back! Also serve different kinds of Kool-Aid in large pitchers as refreshing beverages. Don't forget, of course, to save room for the birthday cake! It's best to custom order it from a respectable bakery, or make the cake from a box and ice it from a book's instructions.  4. For games and activities, have traditional favorites like limbo, tag, charades, and come up with a creative variation on Pin the tail on the donkey. A piņata adds a nice touch to any sleepover too. If you're between ages  9-14, you'll enjoy a makeover! Have a manicure, pedicure, and styling saloon set up in the garage. Use nail polish, face and hand lotion, blush, lipstick, lipbalm, and rouge to pretty each other up, and maybe guests can take turns in a hot soak or mom's own peppermint cream foot massage for their feet. Have guests contribute by bringing their own favorite cosmetics. Having a dance contest and rock to great pop groups as you pair off and work up a routine!   5. For slumber party decoration, string rolls of colorful streamers all over the party room. Don't forget a few helium-filled balloons to add a jamming effect! Plaster a few glow in the dark stars and moons on the party room's ceiling, and a few posters of your favorite celebrities on the walls! Distribute several cuddly bedtime friends over the floor for guests to sleep with! and on one side of the room, string a long white banner on which your guests may sign before they leave.    6. Your guests are your main attraction. Sharing time and laughter with them is what makes a sleepover so fun! Don't be afraid to be flexible with plans, and don't panic if an accident happens or an argument breaks out. Be calm and figure it out with the arguers. Having a sleepover party should be a blast!
