INVITATIONS: The invitations were bought online at birthdayinabox.com. They had fun pictures of nail polish, hairspray, comb/brush and toes being painted. DECORATIONS: The girls were greeted by a sign on the door that I made saying Madison's Marvelous Day Spa, Walk-Ins Welcome. I used images from the invitation website to create a matching banner for our door sign. The color scheme was white table clothes with aqua blue and pink accents. Each station was labeled with a sign using the same banner clip art as the sign on the door. We wanted this to look elegant so we served the food out of glass bowels or pitchers and bought the plastic glass-looking plates, silverware and wine glasses. I set the table with the glass dishes, a white table cloth, pink placemat and aqua blue napkin at each setting. I had lavender, jasmine and vanilla candles burning all over the house. I also plugged in 2 plug-ins that were lavender and vanilla scented so the house had a fresh spa scent. I used an aqua blue table cloth outside on the sidewalk as a red-carpet leading up to the door of the Day Spa. ACTIVITIES: Once inside the girls signed in to 1 of 3 different stations. This helped to determine who would go where once everyone had arrived. After they signed in they received their day spa robe. The robes were adult size XL t-shirts which I bought at a craft store for about $2 each. We used a serger sewing machine and cut/serged the shirts up the middle to create the robe. The bottom hem of the shirt was serged off and sewed onto the back of the shirt to create a tie for the robe. Then I folded back the lapels of the shirts and tacked on a satin bow on each side. This really dressed them up. The girls waiting in the living room with an assortment of American Girl and pre-teen magazines until everyone had arrived. Once everyone was there, we went into our master bathroom in front of the large mirror for facials. They were all dressed in their robes so nothing got on their clothes and I gave them all a hair band to keep the hair off their faces. We gave everyone a warm washcloth to start with which they put on their faces for a few minutes. Then I had my daughter start and together we showed them how to apply the facial masque. After they watched I squirted the facial masque in each of their hands and let them go to work. They had a blast watching each other put their masques on. Next we gave each girl 2 cucumber slices which had been soaked in warm water. If you soak the slices for about an hour it will soften them, and then chill for a short time before the party. The girls took their slices back to the living room and lay down on a big blanket I had laid out on the floor along with a ton of pillows. This makes a great picture with all their heads in the middle of the circle with white/cucumber faces. When they were done we went back to the bathroom to remove the facials masques with fresh washcloths. Now we were ready to split up into the stations they had been signed up for. The 3 stations they rotated between were: Manicures & Pedicures, Hair & Make-up, and Decorating Flip-flops. There were 9 girls so it worked great with groups of 3 at each. I enlisted the help of a good friend and her two teenage daughters to be my coworkers at the spa. The four of us were dressed all in black. MANICURES & PEDICURES: The two teenage workers were at this station and the girls started by using a scented sugar scrub on their hands. They washed this off and then applied the same scented lotion to their hands. Then they went to the manicure table and soaked their feet in a tub of bath salts and bath oil under the table while they were getting their nails manicured. Once their fingernails were done their feet were dried off and they got their toe nails painted. HAIR & MAKE-UP: After nails they moved to the hair and make-up table. Here we had 3 high back chairs where they could sit and relax while I applied a small amount of make up. Eye-shadow and a lip gloss of their choice. Next they got to pick a hairstyle from the American Girl book Hair: Styling Tips and Tricks for Girls. This book was a terrific resource. While they were getting their hair done they had a great time reading and discussing the latest gossip in their pre-teen magazines. I styled their hair like the book and then applied some fun glitter as the finishing touch to the hair do. DECORATING FLIP-FLOPS: After hair and make-up they went to the craft table. Here my good friend helped them make fun flip-flops to wear home to show off their beautiful pedicured feet. I bought patterned flip-flops from our local JoAnn Fabrics store. The girls got to pick from an assortment of colored satin ribbon. My friend would cut off about a yard of ribbon for each foot and they wrapped the straps of each flip-flop. After the ribbon was on they glued on flat back rhinestones. All the supplies for this were found at JoAnns, even the flip-flop glue. It worked great! GAMES: The only game we played was while opening gifts. Once everyone was done rotating through the stations they all sat on the big blanket and pillows in the living room again and we played music on and off while they passed the presents around the circle. When the music stopped, the gift she was holding was the one she opened. The birthday girl had her picture taken with each girl after their gift was opened. This is a great visual reminder for thank you notes. FOOD: After the gifts were opened we had a cupcake cake and mixed fruit. The mixed fruit was just strawberries and red and green grapes. The cake was 2 dozen cupcakes arranged in the shape of a mask. Think of a sleeping mask, but with cucumbers in the center where your eyes would be. The cupcakes were put together tightly on the tray and the entire top was frosted so it looked like a cake, but it was super easy to serve. The girls drank ice water with lemon wedges. FAVORS: Just as we finished eating the parents started to arrive. As each girl left we gave them a drawstring canvas backpack bag (Target $ spot) filled with a manicure set, pedicure set, mini 3 pack of nail polish (all from Target $ spot). Also they got to keep their robes, hair bands and flip flops. OTHER THINGS TO MENTION: Our party lasted 3 hours and we were a little rushed at the end. With 9 girls another hour to hour would've been perfect. Over the years this site has been a great resource for planning our parties. I've taken bits and pieces from others ideas and combined them along with my own ideas in to what the girls all said was one of the best parties they'd ever been too. I hope some of this will help you with your party too.
