To celebrate our son's 2nd birthday my husband and I chose Spongebob as the theme.
TJ enjoyed Spongebob from an early age, even perfecting his laugh, so we thought this would be fun for everyone. We read others' ideas, looked through websites and studied Spongebob on tv! We decided to use a combination of store bought items and our imagination (remember that episode where Spongebob and Patrick use their imagination in the big tv box?) Every outing became an opportunity to find something new for the party...including the "claw" at the Jersey shore boardwalk arcades (where my husband won Mr. Krabs and Gary!) A stuffed Spongebob sat on our front step holding a #2 balloon, and greeted our guests. Upon entering our house you are in our dining room, which was transformed into an under the sea theme: blue crepe paper on the ceiling to simulate waves, fish cutouts hung from the ceiling, green crepe paper skirt on one table for food, a Spongebob fleece on the other table where our Spongebob cake sat. We had floating fish candles in a dish on the table with the food, starfish and pinapple center pieces. We found gummy Krabby Patty candies that also decorated the table along with goldfish crackers. I inherited an old steamer trunk, which served as our treasure chest. Other decorations included: helium filled pink balloons that to which I added pink crepe paper "legs" to make jellyfish (really, really neat affect!), leis, spongebob bath sponge stuck to the mirror in our powder room, fish picks for the fruit, Mr. Krabs holding a $1 bill, "Gary" on our dog's dish, Sandy Cheeks under a (cheese) dome, which my father-in-law created, and of course, happy birthday streamers! The whole party revolved around a treasure hunt that my husband wrote as a poem. We had both sets of grandparents and another couple man 3 stations, along with myself. The hunt was to collect items to become a real pirate. The first station the kids had to reach into a "treasure bag" for a jewel (a Spongebob or Patrick ring), the second station the kids got tatooed (Tatoos4you.com I think is where my husband found them), the third station they received their pirates' hats and the fourth station I handed out Mrs. Puff sipper cups (Oriental Trading). Then, we broke for lunch: hamburgers, hot dogs, pasta salad with octopus hot dogs on top, more mushrooms stuffed with crab meat and pizza cups. As everyone was finishing up one of the kids asked if we could start the treasure hunt again? The second half of the treasure hunt included Pin the Pants on Spongebob (I initially got the idea from the internet, but again my father-in-law created Spongebob freehand.) Then we looked for their final bag of treasure - their gift bag - which was hidden in my steamer trunk. The gift bags included water wigglers or a water game, Spongebob stickers or Spongebob candy dispensers, bubbles with fish on the top, fish sunglasses and a parachute man (okay, this has nothing to do with Spongebob, but was a hit and kept the kids busy running upstairs to our foyer balcony to drop the parachuters!) We used the cake recipe from NickJr.com, but substituted alot of the candy for colored icing. I'd suggest using as much candy as possible, just for ease of decoration. The colored icing on top of icing got difficult to work with. The cake only feeds 12, and we had 25. So, we created jellyfish cupcakes. Yellow cake with pink icing and rope/peelable Twizzlers cut to make their legs. We gave Spongebob a fish net (from PetSmart) and surrounded him with 8 "jellyfish" - one for each kid at the party. The cake was definitely time consuming, but received praises and compliments from everyone! And, we were very pleased with the jellyfish addition. Overall, we'd do it again. Just start looking for decorations early (we searched for a good month) and start decorating your house at least one week before the party date. The cake...take your time and make sure the kids are in bed, so you can concentrate!
