My son turned 2 in October. He really loves the theme song to spongebob squarepants, so I decided to do a Spongebob party. I downloaded a spongebob character from the internet and made the
invitations on my computer (free). I figured a 2 year old's attention span wasn't very long so I limited the activities to one. I decided to have them make paperbag puppets. I printed
spongebob's body and body parts of www.dltk-kids.com and I already had some paper bags, the lunch size (free also).
I cut out all the pieces ahead of time and put them in ziploc bags along with a glue stick. For decoration I used blue and green streamer and blue balloons to mimic the sea. I had a piece of louon board from a previous craft project and decided to draw a very large spongebob on it (about 5 feet tall). I used craft paint to color him. I measured my older son's head and cut out a circle where spongebob's nose would have been for the kids to stick their head through. On my computer I designed photo cardholders. On the front it said "Thanks for coming" and had another downloaded picture of spongebob on it. On the inside it said "SEA U LATER" and had a starfish and lobster on it. The right-inside cover was made like a picture frame. Around the border it said "Spongebob SquarePants Birthday Celebration 2002" (free). I purchased instant film to take a picture of each child behind the spongebob cut-out. The cake was a sheet cake designed like spongebob (they have a cake recipe on the Nickjr.com website but it was a little more complicated than necessary). I had planned to download the spongebob theme song from the internet as well, but ran out of time. The kids really enjoyed making the paperbag puppets, but the most fun was picture taking. The parents were also impressed by the thank-you cards with their childs photo. Walmart had a ton of spongebob decorations, I purchased the tablecloth, plates, and napkins. My centerpiece was a spongebob plush toy. I made goodie bags that consisted of: green and yellow cotton candy, a spongebob paddle ball, and a smiley face ring. For added fun, I left two of my son's larger toys in the party area: a ballpit and a little tykes slide. The kids really enjoyed themselves and so did I. Now I have to figure out what to do with a five foot spongebob!
