Bicycle Party 5-7yr

March 2003

LuAnn in Sugar Land, Texas

In January, my two oldest boys turned seven and five.  I am always looking for new and fun ideas for their birthday parties.  This year we decided to have a bicycle birthday. The invitation read:   Wheels are fun, wheels are cool. You usually ride them to school. Some do jump, filps, and turn.  All the tricks are hard to learn. It's a BYOB (Bring Your Own Bicycle) Birthday Party.   My seven year old just learned to ride his bike without training wheels, and my five year old was becoming an avid rider, so it was perfect for both.  We had a BYOB party in our large cul-de-sac, and over 20 kids thought it was great! First, everyone was given the opportunity to decorate their own bike with streamers and signs. Then all the boys and girls rode their bicycle around the cul-de-sac. Some decided to have races with one another or form their own obstacle course.    We hosted a local police officer to come to the party and discuss bicycle safety with the children.  He was excellent and brought coloring books and a handout discussing bicycle safety for each child.  The cake I ordered from a local bakery turned out very cute- I provided finger bikes and a stunt boy doing a flip off a ramp. The goodie bags had a bicycle chain lock, bicycle water bottle, finger bikes, bicycle stickers, and bicycle key chain that were all purchased at our local dollar store. All the kids had a lot of fun, the parents were very impressed with my creativity, and most of all everyone got to show off their new bicycle tricks.  The parents were pleased because all the five and seven year olds went home worn out.   Note of Caution!!!!  --  It is wise to ensure that the cul-de-sac is one way!  It is also wise to have seperate ride times for the seven year olds doing 30 miles an hour, and their two year old little brothers on scooters.  Luckily, we didn't have any major collisions.  Good luck and good riding!
