GIRLS SPORTS PARTY This theme evolved out of my daughter's desire to have a volleyball party for her 10th birthday.
Unfortunately, volleyball-themed items are non-existent, so we revised the plan when we finally found girls sports party theme items at the site partysolver.com . The theme is all girls sports - volleyball, soccer, basketball and softball - in shades of pink, purple, turquoise and yellow. My daughter designed invitations with a sports them and clip art found online. We made teams from the guest list and awarded points for first, second and third places to determine who would win the prizes. Some games were team games, others were individual. We played water balloon volleyball (each team gets on opposite sides of the net/rope with all players holding on to the sides of the beach towel. One team "volleys" the water balloon over the net to the other team using only the beach towel. Points are scored if a team doesn't make it over the net or if a team drops/pops the balloon) - this was the most popular game! We also had a water sponge relay race where the teams lined up between a large tub of water with two sponges in it and identical bowls at the opposite end of team's line. The distance between players is far enough that they must toss the sponge to the next person until it reaches the person next to the bowl who then squeezes out as much water as possible into the bowl then runs back to the tub, soaks the sponge and the whole thing starts again. The team to get through their line twice with the most water in the bowl wins. We used a basketball hoop to see which team could score the most baskets in 60 seconds; we hung a hula hoop from our swing set to see who could throw the softball through it from the farthest away; and a soccer relay where girls had to hop down/back with a soccer ball between their knees. For favors & activities, we filled a soccer ball pinata (which wouldn't break open, so my husband pitched it to the girls who used a regular wooden bat to break it open). We watched Mary Kate & Ashley's "Switching Goals" for the slumber party part. Favors consisted of soccer/basketball/baseball small notepads, pencils and erasers purchased at the local educational store for teachers. We also purchased some really cool sports tattoos geared toward girls from Oriental Trading Co.'s site. We purchased the cake from Dairy Queen which offered a girl volleyball player design (also available through our local grocery store bakery). The drink was of course Gatorade. Overall, this was my daughter's favorite party so far.
