My son loves Star Wars, so for his 5th birthday we decided to do a Star Wars theme party. I read all of the ideas on this site for tips on invitations, but could not find what I wanted.
Then it hit me- I'll make a DVD. After browsing and saving lots of images of characters, the title Star Wars, pictures of black starry skies and the theme music, I was ready. I used Microsoft movie maker. The dvd started with the logo and went into the traditional scrolling of the words. It told the story of a boy of destiny, who breifly went to the dark side, then committed to the jedi way of life. It asked for the guests help fight with the rebel alliance to feet the dark side. Mixed in between the story, there were photos of my son growing up. When it talked about the dark side, it showed him with pouty faces and the music matched the mood. Toward the end I used character pictures with my families heads imaged onto the bodies. Grandpop made a funny green yoda! The invitations were such a hit that everyone came- including several very excited fathers. For decorations we used a red and black theme. My dining room is red, so that was the Jedi council room (party food room) I set the kids tables up like a horseshoe and borrowed enough chairs to seat 14. We used my sons large star wars ships and the cake as decorations, as well as lifesize characters, posters, crepe paper and balloons. For the party I had it set up like a Jedi training session. As the guests arrived, they were given jedi robes with hand painted foam masks of several characters. They turned out so cute! They then customized light sabers while waiting on everyone to get there. I used the idea of the foam noodles with electrical tape for the handle. At first I thought my star wars saavy guests would refuse the fake saber, but they loved them! (it poured rain, so I am so glad I used the noodles!) After they had to learn to use their sabers. We took the sabers and played keep the balloon off the ground, used them to pop bubbles, and had several spontaneous fights with them! The favorite game was destroy the death star. I drew a huge death star with sidewalk chalk on the driveway. When it was not raining, they took turns bombing it with water balloons to destroy (erase) the death star. The kids then had to get the bad guys. We had 3 lifesize stand ups- Bobo Fett, C3p0/r2D2 and Chewie- the kids had to use foam rocket launchers to shoot Bobo Fett. Then we went outside for the last test of a Jedi. They had to use the force to make the garage door open. When it worked my dad in a COOL Darth Vader costume came out. The kids attacked him with the pool noodles and had pictures made. We also did the Darth Vader helmet pinata. All of this makes for very hungry Jedis. We had droid dogs and bobo fett buns, vader veggies, chewie cheese torte, ships and dip, light saber rods (pretzel rods dipped in chocolate with star sprinkles) and luke's hands- plastic gloves filled with popcorn. For drinks we had a yoda soda bar with yoda soda, wookie water, jabba juice, padame punch, leia lemonade and tatooine tea. For the cake I used an idea I got on here- the death star being attacked by ships. We used the wilton half ball shaped pan for the death star. For the ships I used cupcakes with small star wars ships from ebay. I used clear cups at different heights and put glow sticks in some. The whole thing sat on carboard covered in black paper with white stars. For an exploding effect, I used the sparking candles. It was a big hit! After a wild present opening it was time to go- I handed out official jedi certificates and goody bags to match their costumes. They were filled with star wars pez, bubbles, droid arms (little grabbers, star wars stickers, and glow sticks. Everyone had a good time- adults and kids alike. It would have been a little calmer outside, but we live in North Texas and it has been flooding here for the past few weeks, so my yard is like the Dagobah swamps! How will I top this for my daughter?
