For my son's 8th birthday party, I was told the theme had to be Star Wars. With only 10 children coming, I began my work by making each child a Jedi robe from a brown terry fabric I bought for
$1 a yard in the Los Angeles garment district. I can't sew, but I managed to make a pattern and thread them up! My daughter, the only girl invited, got a white robe to be Princess Leya.
(spelling?) Invitations said "Calling all Jedi to a special meeting of the Jedi Council," and gave our "coordinates," including, Earth, USA. While in LA to get the fabric,
I found cheap light sabers that cost 50 cents each. Had I not, I would have had the children make them from tubing at Home Depot. When the children arrived, they had duels with the Light
Sabers and got saber snacks, which were celery sticks with handles made of carrots. The entire eating area was blacked out with black construction paper and on top of that, I pasted space
scenes so it would look like they were on a space ship looking out. I also made a "control panel" from a long, tube like Fedex package, including "buttons," made from
circle stickers from an office supply store. My son told me he didn't want any usual games. The children watched the first Star Wars movie, had star wars cake and pizza. My son said it was
the best day of his life.
