If you are planning a surprise party, don't put the emphasis in HIDING the surprise. A birthday is a 24-hour event not just an hour or two in the evening. Your surprise may be the best in the world, but it will never make up for the confusion and hurt a "forgotten birthday" causes throughout the day.
