Salsa/Tango Party:   This year I was planning on a great 16th birthday party since it will be my last. I WOULD RECCOMENT THIS FOR 16YR. AND UP.I am learning how to salsa dance and used it for my idea. First of all Salsa dancing is a type of Latin Dance, and Tango is a bit more "passionate" but really beautiful to watch-the most important thing is that you can do anything with it. INVITATIONS: Be creative-I used a nice hand-made paper and did a "latin" themed invite....flowers, sillouhettes(spelling?)of dancers, etc...SETTING: The setting could be simple to elaborate-you could rent a small or medium sized hall for the evening, or even use your basement. SET-UP: If your renting a hall then you could push everything to the sides-if the hall has tables and chairs push the table and chairs around the dance floor in the center-a spotlight will work great if the hall has one (to illuminate the dancers)..as for the basement, you can do the same as with the hall-set up chairs and table near the walls and leave the center for the dancing. Set the tables with roses, white sand spilled in the center around a candle/vase or decoration-if sand is too messy then you can use marbles or leaves or flower petals-it gives it a romantic feeling to the dancing and the whole area. In an-off area you could have the "bar" area and learn how to make non-alcoholic margeritas and pina coladas-as well as a snacks bar. DANCING: if you dont know how to salsa or tango dance then the best thing is to rent a video of instruction either flamenco (which is in between tango and salsa), salsa dancing, or tango dancing. Another good thing to do is get an instructor to come and teach your freinds. MUSIC: As for the music...go to your local library and find all the tango, salsa, merangue, flamenco, anything that has a "latin" beat. Be sure to have some fast melodies and some slow for resting and chatting and snacking. If your library doesnt have any or much-download the melodies or borrow from friends. GUESTS/GOODIES: This is more intended for 16 years and older....and also for best looking tango/salsa-you need boys that are willing to learn how to dance and want to dance. Your guests should come in somewhat formal attire; Girls: dresses that are light and flowy about to your knees and some COMFORTABLE sandals or shoes. Boys: Should dress pretty casually- nice pants and button-down shirt and clean shoes. Goodies: Your guests can go home with the satisfaction of learning an international type of dance or in you really want to give them something...for the dancing couples you could make a small one or two flower and a bunch of nice leaves and grasses bouquet.
