For my daughter's 6th birthday, we had a formal tea party/brunch. I bought printable wedding invitations that were on clearance and had an elegant flower embossed on them.
I printed them with a beautiful font found on dafont.com called porcelain and wrote You are cordially invited to celebrate Maddi's sixth birthday at A tea party brunch Saturday February 21 2009 Ten-thirty am our address and Please come dressed in your finest tea party attire and enjoy some traditional tea party fare. Please respond to .... I decided to make it extra special by going to flea markets thrift shops antiques store etc. to find real porcelain dishes and cups. I found the cutest bunny tea set at the Salvation Army for only $12. I also found a tea set with lunch plates for $20 at the antique shop. Make sure to mention what you are doing and usually they are willing to come down off the price. I also purchased white gloves little purses and hats for each child. I got each item for a dollar. The hats were at the dollar store. The purses and gloves from the Target $1 bin. I also found long pearl beads from a thrift shop for cheap (Mardi gras beads). I then set up a vanity and table with makeup dress-up items like boas shoes jewelry and had a teenager come and do the girls makeup. For the boys (little toddler boys) I had ties that I purchased at the flea market for $1. All the girls (and small boys) came dressed to the nines. I had a kid's long table with chairs decorated with pink satin slip covers that I tied with tulle. I had a neighbor hem the ends but just tied them on. I found the fabric in Walmart's dollar fabric and the tulle was in a roll in the wedding supply section. The table was covered with a white table cloth also from Walmart. I purchased fancy cloth napkins from the antique and thrift shops and tied them with ribbon. I had the table set with place cards that I made from the invitation set (since it was a wedding set it came with rsvp cards that I cut into place cards). I found some really beautiful trays and tiered servers at stores like Ross and the Salvation Army. I made the cake myself. It was a three tiered cake with white buttercream frosting and pink trim. I bought pink silk flowers (daisy) for the top. It really was beautiful and fit the theme perfect and I am not a great cake decorator but this was simple. That was the centerpiece of their table. I flung open the french doors in my living room and made the party inside and out. We had yummy foods like chocolate covered strawberries tea sandwiches (pb&j cucumber ham and cheese) quiche chips and dip fruit kabobs (I think I got off this site and how gorgeous they were)made with strawberries blueberries pineapple and cantalope hot spinach dip petit fours (from publix) just to name a few. I had three tea pots. One was filled with hot chocolate one with lemonaide and one with hot raspberry tea. They loved filling their own cups and serving their own food. I also set up a small little tikes table with plastic tea sets for the little toddlers that came with the sisters. We played games (most of which I found on this site) like balancing the book on your head kissing the frog (like pin the tail on the donkey but instead putting on lipstick and kissing a cutout of a frog) and a pinata (which didn't fit the theme but my daughter said was a must have). The party favors were the hats gloves purses and beads that everyone took home. The pictures from the party turned out gorgeous and everyone talks about what a wonderful party it was. I think I had more fun planning it than anything."
