My son, Liam, had a teddy bear picnic for his fourth birthday. We were lucky enough to have a beautiful sunny day at the Children's Garden at Clemson Research Center. I made invitations in the shape of a bear paw.  I used brown construction paper for the bear paw shape and brown grocery bag paper for the "pads" on the front of the paw.  The front of the invitation had the number 4 written in each of the three small pads at the top and "It's a "bear"thday party!" written on the larger pad at the bottom.  It opened at the bottom so that I could write the who when and where info. inside. I also requested that each guest bring a favorite teddy bear and a beach towel.  As the guests arrived, I had them choose bear headbands & decorate a pair of "binoculars" made out of two toilet paper tubes hot glued together.  The children used markers and crayons, but seemed to like the effect of markers better. (I had already strung each pair with brown yarn so they could be worn around the neck.) The children wore their binoculars while exploring the fun areas of the garden. The areas in the garden include Pooh Bear theme and a favorite children's stories area with MacGregor's Garden, The Three Bears chairs and bowls, Old MacDonald's Farmhouse---all child size!!I gathered our guests back around me and assigned them to one of three grown-ups. Each grown-up was given a list of items to find on a scavenger hunt with the children in his/her group. The kids used their binoculars and loved this!!Once all the groups returned my husband and my mother sat everyone down on the beach towels with their favorite bears for pictures while I began getting the "bear" food ready to serve. We served blueberries and strawberries, goldfish crackers, teddy graham crackers and pb&j sandwiches cut out with teddy bear cookie cutter. We passed the juice bags around and munched and sipped away! We then served bear paw cupcakes made with an oreo and three chocolate chips for the "paw" on each.  As a grand finale we let each "bear" take a whack at our Beehive Pinata!! I made the pinata out of paper mache. I just blew up a large balloon and used a mix of flour and water to dip newspaper strips into to cover the balloon. We popped the balloon once the mache was dry and painted it yellow with black stripes to look like a bee hive. I found some pom-pom bumblebees that we glued on here and there. We glued some to a bit of fishing line attached to the bottom of the hive to look as if the bees were entering or exiting the hive!!The children gathered the spilling treats in their yellow goodie sacks. We all had a growling good time!!
