Best Loved Doll Party was based on a beloved children's book "Best Loved Doll" by Rebecca Caudill. In the invitations, the girls were asked to bring their best loved doll to the
party. When the children came, they decorated straw hats with heart stickers- one hat for them, and a smaller hat for their best loved doll.
The girls could also decorate Shrinky-Dink hearts that said "My Best Loved Doll". These were shrunk down later in the party and made into necklaces for the baby dolls. The girls then could take their babies and hats and have a photo made. A little table with 2 chairs was set up with a tea set and fresh flowers, and the girls could put on dress up clothes and make-up for the photo. These photos were sent to the girls later with the thank you cards. I backed each photo with pink flowery paper. Several games were played. When each girl arrived at the party, she got a little decorated basket instead of a goodie bag. Each time the girls participated in any activity, they got a piece of candy or small token to put in the basket. A drawing of my daughter's favorite doll was made on a large poster board which she helped color before the party. It was used to play Pin the (straw)Hat on Baby. Baby Doll Walk was played like a cake walk. I drew several baby items on poster boards (bib, bottle, crib, etc.). During the party the girls walked on the numbered pictures until the music stopped. The girl who had her number drawn from a basket received a prize. (Every girl won of course). Drop Baby into the Bath (Drop Clothespin into the Bottle) was played with wooden clothespins painted as babies (blue plastic wrap was put in a wide mouth jar as water). Then we had a relay race with baby dolls. Girls had to race to put on dress-up shoes and necklaces, and stroll their babies to the next girl in line. The dolls either participated in each game, or they got to "watch". My husband made a low table for the girls to all sit at, decorated with a pink tablecloth, paper doilies and fresh flowers. He made a small similarly decorated table for the baby dolls nearby. For the food, we served sandwiches cut with butterfly cookie cutters, sugar cookies made to look like straw hats (with candy leather bows and decorating gel hearts). Delicate chocolates and strawberries were offered. The cake was a pink bassinet with a baby doll on top(in same dress as birthday girl).
