Maurice Sendak's "Little Bear" was the theme for our son's 3rd birthday party.
The week before my son and I made 8 foot tall trees cut out of cardboard, which we painted simply with poster paints. After they were dry I added detail with a black marking pen to complete the story book feel. We set them up around the party area, added an astro turf carpet and some live ferns to create Little Bear's forest. For the party we had a picnic in the forest on a red checkered table cloth. The foods were simple - Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cut out with a bear cookie cutter, fruit salad, chips, and Gumi bears for favors. For a preschooler activity we made construction paper butterflies made by putting glitter glue on 1 half of the paper and folding it over to create a mirror image. We taped them to the trees in our forest to dry. It was magical! It didn't matter that it rained outside.
