Tie-Dye Slumber Party

August 2004

Regina in Gainesville, MO

I recently threw my 12-year-old niece a tie-dye slumber party. She invited six of her friends between the ages of 10 and 12. For  decorations I found tie-dye cups, plates and napkins and then red and  yellow plates, cups, napkins and plastic ware to complement them. I put tiki torches (with citronella) around the tent  in my backyard (where they slept) and around the food tables and we put up clear  Italian/Christmas lights around the fence and in the trees.  I also made a cake in the shape of a t-shirt and "tie-dyed" it --- inside with baker's  confetti and outside with decorating spray. I made "tie-dye" cupcakes and "psychedelic" ice cream. My niece and a friend of mine filled tie-dye  gift bags with a plain white t-shirt (to tie-dye later) and glow stick and  hid them in various places in my yard. They then made a maze of brightly colored yarn with the girl's names on the end that they had to follow to find their bag. As the girls came in, each of them were given a  tie-dye gift bag filled with candy, pencils, tie-dye memo pads, etc., and a  silk flower. Then they had a race to see who could find their bags first. The girls made their own mini pizzas for dinner. Afterward they played  name that tune (which they loved) and just generally goofed off. They also played murder, truth or dare and made each other up with markers and make-up. In the morning, they had a shaving cream fight  (outside, of course), ate breakfast (I made pancakes, sausage, OJ and  eggs) and filled water balloons (some were "tie-dyed" water balloons)  and had a water ballon fight. Afterward they tie-dyed their t-shirts. I had  bought bracelet kits and they each made a couple bracelets. Then they each got several temporary tattoos and took great pleasure in putting  them on. Of course pictures were taken all throughout the party. All in  all they had a great time and have "demanded" I host another slumber  party next year....my niece has requested a luau.
