Buzz Lightyear Party 2yr

April 2006

Vala in Long Beach, CA USA

For my son's 2nd birthday, we did Buzz Lighyear of Space Command:  The invitations had rockets on them and a space landscape. We printed them at home "Buzz Lightyear Mission Log, Mission:  Invite Star Rangers to attend celebration for Tobey's 2nd Milestone, Stardate(party date information), Coordinates - Space Ranger Academy, Sector 2, Beta Quadrant(address) ,RSVP Star Command, To infinity and beyond." When the guests arrived, they were greeted on our walkway by 2 large rockets my husband had made. He used quicktubes you pour cement in. He painted them white and added foamboard tailfins and neon green top.  He printed our son's name on one and birthday date on the other, 0413.  At the door, was a large Buzz Lightyear Balloon to greet the Space Rangers.   When they walked through to the party, I gave them a Space Ranger Gear box. I used small plastic lunchboxes from the kid meals at Disneyland, but I've seen comparable boxes at the 99cent store & Target. I covered both sides of the box with cardstock for the kids to decorate. In the box, I put a Buzz Lightyear kids phone and a set of Buzz Stickers.  (I didn't like any stickers I found so I used free Clipart on-line, then I used a sticker maker I have.)   In addition to the box to decorate, I had them make official Space Ranger ID tags. I took a picture of each child with an Izone.  I had pictures of Buzz and the Little Green Men/Alien, shrunk down for them to color in to put on the ID tag. On a craft table, I had crayons, glue, glitter pens, etc. The kids made their ID tags, I laminated them using a cold laminator, then I put on a  lanyard(ebay), so they could wear them.   They were a few older kids, so I put out all the Space toys we had, ray guns, light sabers, hover craft, etc.  I let the kids have at it.  Sometimes too much organized activity takes away from the enjoyment. I've found just providing a few appropriate props can get the fun going quickly and without games.   They played and played.  We put out a pop-up tent(3 cubes attached with tubes) as a Space Station for the kids to climb through. We had games, Buzz Says and and Obstacle course for Space Ranger training.   (It was raining this week, so I also had Neon Crayola Model Magic Clay to make Aliens in case we needed extra inside activities.)  For lunch, we served Pizza from Pizza planet.    We got a great Buzz cake from the local bakery.  The kids had so much fun, they stayed 2 hours later, playing and decorating their boxes. As they left, we gave them each a Buzz Lightyear glider to go with their Space Ranger Gear Box.  Most of the kids did their decorating at the end of the party, so they had a chance to calm down before they headed home. A couple of Mom's told me they wore their Space Ranger Id's all weekend.
