Undersea Adventure 6 year olds.
This party was planned as an end-of-the-year event for my kindergartener's class who's mascot is a Dolphin. But it could be easily done as a birthday party, too. We decorated the classroom while the children were at recess so that they would be surprised by the transformation of their class into an ocean. We hung posters of dolphins and whales on the doors and walls. Crepe streamers in several blues and greens were hung individually from the ceiling, and we used large plastic table clothes to create billows for extra water effects. The children's tables were covered with plastic table cloths (again in ocean colors) and sprinkled with a package of sea life shimmery glitter that I found at the dollar store. We also put out real dried colored starfish and sand dollars (Oriental Trading OT). Each chair had a dolphin balloon tied to it. Lilo and Stitch, Little Mermaid and Beach Boy music was played in background. We had a three and a half hour party so we had a good amount of time to kill. Our schedule included lunch, and we ordered pizza. After the children finished their lunch, they went to the circle area where they were instructed on how to create a simple origami whale by my husband. I found the instructions on the enchanted learning website and the paper you can find at many craft stores. Some of the children required help, others completed it all on their own. They turned out adorable and they were very proud of how they turned out. While they were busy in the circle area, we set up the first craft which was jellyfish. I cut half moon shaped tagboard from tropical neon colors. I use discountschoolsupply.com (DSS) for many of my craft purchases. I already had punched a hole in the top of each jellyfish body. I got out circles of foil paper (DSS) in many different colors and bought irredescent gift bag filler (the shredded stuff) for them to attach tentacles to the bottoms of the starfish. Some kids got out of control with the glue, but after they were done, we hung them with neon colored yarn from the ceiling over the circle area as additional decorations. We played an I Spy Game that I wrote with beach/ocean items hidden around the room. Poem read: "I spy a sand shovel and goggles blue, I Spy sunglasses and a cooler too. I spy a smiling beach ball, and a tiny boat.I spy a pretty conch shell, and a tube to float. I spy a white sea gull, and a flip flop that's red. I spy a bathing suit and hat for your head." I printed this out and had it englarged at Staples so that we could hang it on the board so the children could see it while they looked for items. They had to raise their hand when the saw something and say "I Spy ..." The party headed outside for some water balloon fun (children running from one end to the other while the adults through water balloon and the water balls at them). We played a version of sharks and minnows and did crab walk relays and a dolphin ring toss (OT). A bunch of beach like treasures were hidden in the mulch on the playground. Each child had been given a rake or a shovel and we set them loose to dig for treasure. We had items like rings, plastic sea animals, sea shells, etc. After all that running around they had Great White ice pops and presented gifts to their teacher (our school has a nice shady large tent that we went under). We did a dolphin necklace sand art project and a sea shell bracelet (class of 15 was split in half for these two crafts). Then we headed back inside for snack. The children played a version of a musical cakewalk. I found images of all kinds of sea creatures and printed them out, wrote there names and pasted the pictures onto construction paper, which I laminated so I could use them again. I also made "pull cards" to use to call out the animal when the music stopped. Each child received a stuffed dolphin (justdolphins.com) and a dolphin necklace (OT). Snack was ocean slushies (ice, blue hawaiian punch and Sprite) with fish straws (OT), rice krispie treats with dolphin sprinkles in them and blue jello with gummy fish in it. The children recieved candy treat bags and sand toys to bring home. For quick finishers, we also blew up several underwater scene coloring pages into poster size murals for the children to color together. It was a great summer party.
