My daughter's got a winter birthday (December), so for her 5th birthday, I thought it would be fun to give her a "summer theme" party. The theme of the party was "Under the Sea". We reserved a private indoor lagoon and party room for the occasion. The lagoon was zero depth (good for the little ones) and it had water toys throughout which were a lot of fun! It was 85 degrees in the lagoon area! The kids got to spend the first hour in the lagoon and then we proceeded into the party room (after drying off!) for the next few hours. For an invitation, I typed up the details (with appropriate font style) on brown paper and then had my husband burn the edges of the paper. I rolled the paper up like a scroll, tied it with raffia, and inserted it into a plastic bottle (individual empty water bottles that I had collected and dried out). I also put a little bit of sand in the bottles and sealed them with a cork! I was able to hand deliver most of them, but mailed the rest in bubble envelopes. Oh the calls I received when they got them in the mail! For decorations, the party room was decorated with "Under the Sea" theme tablecloths, cutouts, streamers, etc...)I draped the tables with fish nets and attached starfish to them. I also scattered sea shells all over each table. We had tropical fish balloons around the room too! We brought our own boombox and played the "Under the Sea" theme from Little Mermaid and an Ocean Sounds/Waves CD that I bought. This really created the mood! For food, we served all varieties of goldfish crackers in glass fish bowls as well as Swedish fish. We served chips in sand buckets and tropical fish shaped trays! The dinner was catered. For dessert, I made a blue jello with gummy fish in a glass fish bowl. This was a big hit with the kids! I also made cupcakes decorated with blue frosting and on top of each one I inserted an edible tropical fish that I molded from Starburst candy! I made them in all different colors and everyone was stunned when they heard how they'd been made! I ordered the cake and asked they they frost it with blue frosting and they made the frosting resemble waves. I then decorated the sides with acrylic sea shells and starfish (and green frosting for seaweed effect!). On the top, I had candles in the shape of tropical fish! Everyone got a kick out of the desserts! For goody bags, I ordered "Under the Sea" bags, labeled them with the kid's names, and filled them with age appropriate items like, fish squirts, bubbles, pencils, erasers, slinky's, etc...) We then had the kids line up in front of a treasure chest that I filled with candy and play jewelry, and they each got to scoop out more goodies to put into their bags. They also got to take home any starfish or sea shells that they wanted! It was a ton of fun for both, the kids and the adults! We actually forgot it was winter outside!
