We did an Under the Sea theme for our son's first birthday party.  Being that it was his first we wanted something simple and small, but yet fun. For the invitations we used fish border computer paper and had the invitation read for Sail Mate, Departing Date, Departing Time, and Port Departure (our address). The cake was a sheet cake with blue frosting and then chocolate flavored fish shaped suckers (the fish had food coloring added to make them more colorful) were placed on the cake to make it look like the fish were swimming.  We also weaved blue saran wrap through the sucker sticks. For decorations we hung blue streamers on the windows throughout the downstairs and then taped cut-out sea creatures to the window to make it look like they were swimming. Some of the party took place in our family room so we decorated the fireplace with blue streamers and then placed paper-mache sea creatures behind the streamers again to give the swimming effect. On the tables, we used blue plastic tablecloths and taped more cut-out sea creatures on the tablecloths and then put fish nets over them.  For the centerpieces we put goldfish in fish bowls on each table.  Out on the patio we filled his baby pool with water and put some of his fish bath toys in it to float and for the kids to play with. As party favors, we took baby food jars and filled them with gummy fish and then glued a small cut-out fish to the lid with a thank you for coming to celebrate my first birthday saying on it.  The plates and napkins had fish on them and we were able to find some serving trays at a local party store that were in the shape of fish and star-fish.  As appetizers, we used bowls of gold fish and oyster crackers along with shrimp, shrimp dip, and another dip for crackers that had crab meat in it. We also made blue Kool-Aid and put some gummy fish in that.  As guests arrived they saw a balloon fish tied to our mailbox along with some other balloons.
