For my son's 5th birthday, we had a Wild West Round-up party.  I downloaded a graphic of a "Wanted" poster & made custom invitations by cutting out pictures of each of our guests (most had been friends since birth; the one child I did not have a photo of was supplied by her mom in advance) that I glued onto the center of the poster. They read: Wanted!  (Child's name) For: Joshua's Birthday Party  <Date: Time:> At the County Jail (our address) Then I personalized each one with a special warning under the photo: "Warning!  Should be considered very clever" or "May talk your ear off!"  or "May steal your heart!"  I made a special version of a poster for our son & hung it on the door the day of the party. My son's birthday is in October, so the weather is always chancy for us.  It was a very cool day, but we started the party outside around some hay bales we picked up from a farmer's market & had a fire in our outdoor stone barbecue.  The kids all made S'mores & then we moved the party inside. Each child was given a plastic cowboy hat when they arrived. We played cowboy music (downloaded a lot of Marty Robbins songs from the internet) and the kids did a freeze dance game to the music. We had a western trail supper- I made pancakes, eggs, and sausages for dinner, which all of the kids LOVED!  I used a gingham-checked tablecloth & used baskets for passing utensils, napkins, syrup & ketchup.  After playing "cowboy, cowboy, Indian"  (remarkably like Duck, duck, goose) we had opened presents & had cake- a tipi cake I baked in a deep, slightly narrow bowl that was then turned upside & wrapped in fondant.  I used pretzel sticks at the top to leave an opening & tied them w/a red licorice rope and created a flap for the front of the tipi.  I glazed it with food coloring mixed w/water to give it a tanned leather appearance & shaped Indian symbols from additional fondant to adhere to the sides of the tipi.  When the candles were put on top & lit, it looked like a fire coming out of the top of the tipi! While my son opened his presents, I gave each of the children their party favors- for the boys, cowboy sticker books & for the girls I purchased special books from the American Girls series that focused on the pioneer era or people format he southwest.  The party was a great success.
