A Western-Style Party Invitations: We used the Print Shop and came up with an appropriate Western-style card. We asked each girl to wear some kind of western-gear.
Arrival: Upon arrival, each girl was handed a bag of "loot" (a baggie with 10 pennies in it). She was also given a new western name (Calamity Jane, Bronco Betty, etc.). From that point on, the girls had to refer to each other by their new names. If someone was caught not using a name, she had to pay a penny to the girl who caught her. The girls were then directed to a table where they used fabric markers to decorate a "Nap Sack" for the birthday girl (a pillow case). She could also make a very simple bandana necklace for herself. I hemmed some bandana fabric and they rolled it up and passed it through a silver buckle-type thing I found at a craft store. Very inexpensive, but cute. Games: We played both quiet and active games. They included a dress-up relay, where the kids had to put on and take off western gear, riding a pretend horse to and from; pin-the-cowgirl-hat-on-the-cowgirl (just paper cut-outs); charades--just a lot of basic games with a western twist. Note: when the girls were playing the games they often forgot to use the western names--there was lots of laughter, fun, and penny-exchanging! Table/Food: The table was set with a bandana tablecloth, and the birthday cake was decorated with a purchased plastic horse. Take-home bags: These were simply brown lunch bags with their new cowboy names written on them. A little candy was put in, western stickers, as well as a thank you note from the birthday girl. They could carry home their pennies, necklaces, etc. The party was a lot of fun. We parents were exhausted, but it was worth it!
