For my daughters first birthday party, we had her a Wizard of Oz party. I had her a Dorothy dress made, and she wore a pair of red glitter shoes that looked like ruby slippers. She also
carried a small Toto in her basket.
I made my own invitations that said. "Attention Munchkins, Come over the rainbow with Kaitlyn as she celebrates her first birthday." The inside of the party said "Follow the yellow brick road to the location" Then below that was a picture of Dorothy and a quote that said "Remember, it a place you can't get to by boat or plain, it's far far away, beyond the moon behind the rain. It must be over the rainbow!!" I had her party at a large building in our town. There were about 50 people at the party. On the outside of the building, I had a pair of black and white stripped pantyhose stuffed with paper towels to look like the building had fallen on the witch. At the first set of doors, I had a sign that said "Bell out of order, please knock." A few friends had made a yellow brick road out of aisle carpet that is used at weddings. My dad has a mold that he uses to make concrete steps that is in the shape of bricks, so they used that to spray paint yellow bricks to make a yellow brick road. I had this down the center of the room. They also used that aisle carpet to make a rainbow that we hung from the ceiling. I used red table clothes to represent the ruby slippers, green for the emerald city, and yellow for the yellow brick road. I found large nets that hold balloons and blew up punching bags to put in them and tied it to baskets to represent the hot air balloon. My mom owns a flower shop so she was able to get one of her wholesalers to make red ceramic glitter shoes for her that we put flowers in on each table. Each table also had rainbow colored balloons in the middle. I also had some pink, yellow, and purple horses on the table to represent the horse of a different color. I found small clear plastic shoes that I sprayed red, then sprayed them with glue and dipped them in glitter to make ruby slippers, I gave these to the little girls and put them 2 sets on each of the tables. Wizard of Oz music was playing in the background during the party. I uses Wizard of Oz plates and napkins, along with red and yellow spoons and forks. We had her cake made at a local bakery, it was a round cake with each of the characters drawn around the sides and a rainbow on the front. There was a yellow brick road drawn from one side, across the top, down onto the other side. There were also a pair of ruby slippers made out of cake and icing on the top that I could take off for her to dig into. I had muchkin mix for the kids, it was rainbow goldfish, rainbow marshmallows, and rainbow animal crackers. I had green sherbert on black plates to represent the withch melting and ruby red punch. For games, the kids played Tin Man heart pass. They sat in a circle and passed a heart shaped box wrapped in paper about 10 times and when the music stopped, they got to unwrap one layer and whoever unwrapped the last piece got to keep it. We passed it while they were listening to a Wizard of Oz CD. There was a witch hat toss where the kids would throw a hula hoop onto a withes hat. I also had a rainbow pinata which I stuffed so full with candy that the kids couldn't bust it. I eventually had to rip the pinata open for them. For the treat bags, I put stickers on suckers that said "From the lollipop guild, and wedding bubbles with stickers that said Glenda's bubbles. I also put coloring books and crayons wrapped in aluminum foil to make them look like a large piece of candy. The girls got magic wands, heart tattos, and purses in their bags along with candy. The boys got balls and cars along with candy. At each persons chair was scroll like the scarecrow got that had a picture of him and said "Thank you for coming to my first birthday party and helping make it special. Kaitlyn"
