Wizard of Oz party (young child). Decorations: 1) Yellow brick road drawn on driveway with chalk. 2) A sign by our bell that read "Bell out of Order. Please Knock".
3) Witches legs made out of red and white striped cloth sticking out from under back yard storage shed. 4) Helium balloons to make a rainbow suspended over green (Emerald City) swing set. Activities: 1) Horse of a Different Color--I drew the outline of a horse on large craft paper and had the children paint it with blow paint. The caption on the painting read, "Now that's the horse of a different color that you've heard tell about." 2) Find the Red Poppies. My daughters and I made red poppies out of red tissue paper. We scattered them all over the back yard and let the children find them. 3) Pin the Tail on the Lion. I drew a picture of a Cowardly Lion and made tails of brown yarn. Each child got to pin on their tail. 4) Red Witch/Green Witch. The rules were identical to "Red Light Green Light", except that I had made a witches hat that was one half red and one half green. The "Witch" wore this hat on their head red in front, green in back and turned back to front saying say "Green Witch!" "Red Witch!". The children would advance on the witch holding cups of water. When the children were close enough, they would pour their water to liquidate him/her. The children loved this game and all wanted turns being the witch. We had to play it over and over. 5) Rainbow piņata. My paper plates and invites were the commercially available ones. For the cake, I had my CD cover of the Wizard of Oz soundtrack (the one that includes some dialogue) scanned onto the top of the cake. The picture on this CD cover features the Emerald City in the background under a rainbow, with Dorothy, the Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man skipping toward you. Party favors included bubbles (reminiscent of Glinda's entrances).
