Wizard of Oz Party! For my daughter's 2nd birthday, we decided on a Wizard of Oz theme being that she was totally captivated with the movie.
At that time, there were no party decorations out there with an Oz theme (like there are now) so I had to get creative. I made several signs out of dowel rods and poster board that said things such as, "To the Emerald City", "Follow the Yellow Brick Road", "This Way to Munchkin Land", "Haunted Castle, Next Exit", "To Kansas"(with an arrow pointing up!), etc. and put them all over the yard, leading up to the house, and throughout the living room. I went to a teacher supply store and bought several yards of yellow-gold paper. I cut it sort of uneven on the sides as if it were a winding pathway, then drew "bricks" on it with a marker. This was the Yellow Brick Road and I layed it on the floor from the front door to the entrance to the kitchen/dining room. I used red, green, yellow/gold, and purple streamers and balloons. The paper plates and silverware were emerald green, and the cups and napkins were yellow/gold. I used a blue/white checkered tablecloth (for Dorothy's cloth in her basket). Some of the silverware and table stuff sat in a basket like Dorothy's in the center of the table. I made Rainbow Punch to serve to the guests. Party favors were put into rainbow colored bags and consisted of rainbow colored pencils, Oz stickers, an apple (remember the angry apple trees?), and a peanut butter cookie cut into the shape of a dog bone. My daughter was the main attraction though...she wore a denim jumper with red shirt underneath and her very own "Dorothy shoes". You can buy glittery red "ruby slippers" that look just like the real thing at Wal-Mart or Target. She still wears them to this day...just a few sizes bigger now!
