Wizard of Oz for 3yo
My daughter Emily loves the Tin Man on Wizard of Oz, so naturally we decided to throw her a Wizard of Oz party featuring the Tin Man for her third birthday. At a local Party Store, I purchased Wizard of Oz invitations, thank you cards, plates and napkins. Because there were no decorations to purchase, we had to get creative and make our own. I color copied a picture of tin man from the invitation and enlarged the picture to use as "pin the heart on Tin Man". With my computer I printed out 9 hearts with all the children names typed inside to pin on the Tin Man. This served as a great game and also added a cute decoration. We also purchased 9 blue oil funnels in the auto section of a large retail chain for about .60 each and painted them metallic silver. We then attached soft elastic for straps making instant Tin-Man party hats (the children loved it and they looked adorable!). I also ordered from Dover the "Wizard of Oz cit". My wonderful husband worked for over a week putting it all together (simple but time-consuming) and it was a beautiful center-piece along with the cake. We also purchased masks from Dover of the Oz characters and hung them with string throughout the room. When children arrived I had the soundtrack from the Wizard of Oz playing. The table was decorated with the Oz city, rainbow cake, "lions, and tigers, and bears" animal cookies, punch and fruit (apples would have been good integrating the tree that threw the apples at the Scarecrow & Dorothy). The children played pin the heart on Tin Man. We then went outside and they tried to knock down the ruby slipper piņata. None of the party supply stores had ruby slippers, but they did have cute ballet slippers...so we just bought ruby red paint and viola, we had our ruby slipper. Inside again, we played a game similar to musical chairs or hot potato, only we passed around one of my daughters ruby slippers (also bought at national retail store). As the soundtrack was playing, the children would pass around the shoe, if the music stopped while you were holding the shoe...you were out! After cake and snacks, Emily opened her gifts and passed out gift bags to the children. The gift bags consisted of stain glass Wizard of Oz coloring books, Wizard of Oz notebooks, Wizard of Oz stickers, and a lollipop. When it was time for the party to end, my daughter put on her ruby slippers, clicked them and said thank you for coming, but remember...there's no place like home. I think all the children had a really good time and I enjoyed spending the time with my daughter planning and preparing everything!
