My daughter is not into watching movies at all with one exception: The Wizard of Oz. So for her 5th birthday that's what she chose. I made the invites using tips from this site.
I ordered blank Wizard of Oz notecards, I then took colored construction paper (colors of the rainbow), glued that to the inside of the notecards, printed out the party information on white cardstock and matted that on blue gingham scrapbook paper. The top of the invite said Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Morgan's House. At the bottom of the invite I also added a different movie quote on each invite (ex. I'll get you my pretty and your little dog too, there's no place like home"). The envelopes were pre-decorated I just made return address labels with the same blue gingham paper our address and the quote Follow the Yellow Brick Road. For decorations I ordered plates & napkins from Celebrate Express I had red utensils and a red tablecloth. I bought balloons that were all the colors of the rainbow and made them into arches that looked like rainbows (I made two of those). One was by the food table and the other was by the entrance to our house. The cake was the centerpiece of the table. I also found an old broom that looked similar to the Wicked Witch's and I found some witch boot covers that we put under our hutch to make it look like the hutch landed on the witch. My daughter was Dorothy for Halloween so she was able to use her costume again and dressed up as Dorothy for her party. We used her basket with Toto inside for decoration as well. The activity was making Glinda's wand. I found foam wands at Michaels bought pink & purple foam letters pink glitter and some misc. foam stickers. I made each girl a little bag containing letters of their name and gave them each a few stickers I had a couple bottles of glitter on the table to share. They all had a blast making the wands especially personalizing them. We played Wizard of Oz Bingo. I made those using blue gingham as the background in each square were different symbols from the movie and then of course scrambled each one so they were all different. I also added movie quotes to the bottom of the Bingo cards it was very easy and inexpensive to do. We also had a pinata. We were able to find a witch pinata filled it with M&M's little packs of Rainblo bubble gum skittles and fruit snacks. Of course to hit the witch pinata we used an old broomstick all the kids had a blast thinking they were getting the Wicked Witch. The cake was the best part! My sister-in-law helped me make it. We bought Wilton's Romantic Castle cake set and instead of making it look like a princess castle we made it look like the witch's castle. I made a couple boxes of cake the bottom was in a 10 inch pan and then I baked 2 8 inch cakes and stacked those. We then made gray/black frosting frosted the cakes and also frosted the plastic pillars. We took the tops of the pillars frosted them and then rolled them in white sparkling sugar. We used brown fondant to make to make the drawbridge and also black fondant to make the windows. Earlier in the year McDonald's had Wizard of Oz Madame Alexander dolls in their happy meals so between myself a few relatives and friends we were able to get multiple dolls I put the Wicked Witch one on top guarding her cake and put the 4 main characters by the drawbridge. It was a lot of work but it was the hit of the party. For the goody bags I bought inexpensive bags again in different colors of the rainbow. On each bag I printed labels with their names on it all in rainbow colors and tied it with blue gingham ribbon. Everyone got a rainbow lollipop ruby red slipper lip gloss I printed Wizard of Oz coloring pages which I rolled up and tied with red ribbon little medals of courage Wizard of Oz puzzles which I found at a party store earlier in the year on clearance the Glinda wands they made and of course due to our many trips to McDonald's each child got a different Wizard of Oz doll. For thank you notes I found blank Wizard of Oz cut out cards a Tin Man Scarecrow the Lion Glinda the Wicked Witch Dorothy and of course her ruby red shoes. It was such a fun party I wish I could do it all over again!"
