My daughter is crazy about The Wizard of Oz, so that was our theme for my daughter's second birthday party. I bought all of the plates and such at a party store, but the decorations I did myself.  First, I used a refrigerator box to create Emerald city. I painted it green and sprayed it with sparkles. I used the rest of the box to cut out a tin man figure (about two feet high). I wrapped him in tin foil and put a tin foil nose sticking out.  I hung crepe paper over my ceiling fan to create a tornado (I got that idea from this site)  I added to the idea by placing a Popsicle stick house hanging in the middle with Dorothy's picture in one window.  There was also a dicut green witch riding a broom in the middle of the tornado. We had just painted our house and had left over brown drop paper in a roll. I painted the paper yellow and spread it out on the back lawn leading to my Emerald city. When the children arrived, we started down the yellow brick road.  We passed a corn field (a few old stalks from our garden) with scarecrow in the middle (our Halloween porch decoration). The children stopped and bobbed for apples with the scarecrow. Each child got their own plastic mixing bowl full of water and one apple each.  We continued on the yellow brick road until we reached the Tin Man on the side of the house. We stopped to pin the heart on him.  Each child got a dicut heart with their name on it. We continued on until we reached a field of poppies (dicut flowers scattered on the yellow brick road.  The children pretended to fall asleep, then my daughter played Glenda, waved her wand, and woke them up.  The finish was reaching Emerald city. My nephew was the wizard and he handed out the treat bags. They had "Cowardly Lion" crowns for the boys and Glenda's wands for the girls.  They had lollipops like the Lollipop guild munchkins. They had rainbow pencils as well.   I had a cake done at the supermarket. I bought the Dorthy and Scarecrow figures from #1 Party Supply on line. (They also had great figures at the Awesome Oz site.) We had a vegetable platter and sandwiches cut in fours. I arranged the food on three platters:  the first had a lion dicut glued to a Popsicle stick propped to the top labeled "Lion's garden": The second had a tiger dicut propped on top of the sandwich platter labeled "Tiger's Tuna";  The third platter had a bear above the sandwiches labeled "Bears Balogna".  I arranged the Vegetables into an "O", and the sandwiches into an "M" and "Y" (O-MY). The final food was a platter of fruit shaped into a rainbow (strawberries above peaches above lemons above blueberries.) There was a cloud of Cool Whip on either end of the rainbow. My daughter's birthday was on September 11th-- Her party was the following Saturday.  Everyone had a blast and escaped reality for a while in our "Land of Oz".
