Party Supplies

My son wanted a Wizard of Oz party for his 4th Birthday. We made invitations with downloaded images of oz characters and we personalized them all, as the ones I ordered didn't arrive in time. We gave guests the option of dressing up as their favorite character (a lot of them did). We decorated the house with streamers like a rainbow along the ceiling and lots of rainbow colored balloons.  We had rainbow streamers dangling in the stairwell up to our apartment and the stairs were covered in yellow board to represent the yellow brick road. Each doorway in the house also had streamers dangling for you to walk through. Outside the door I made the Wicked witch of the Easts legs out of a pair of my daughters old ballet tights with black lines drawn on and stuffed with paper towels. They had sparkly shoes on and I stuffed them under my dresser.  There was a sign on the door reading Emerald city.  I dressed up as Dorothy,(borrowed a dress) My 4 yr old was the tin man (costume made out of cardboard),  My 9 yr old was the scarecrow,(old clothes and straw pinned on) My 7 yr old was Glinda(dress up dress and crown made out of cardboard) and My husband was the mighty oz (Green sheet and sparkly material cape). When the guests arrived they made magic Glinda wands.  I had pre-made cardboard stars and stuck them on dowels.  The girls colored them pink and I had lots of ribbon and stickers to decorated them with.  The boys colored theirs blue and stuck stars on them and had blue ribbon around the wand.  My daughter(7) was dressed as Glinda and helped the little ones. Then we played follow the yellow brick road. I made a road out of yellow card with bricks drawn on it and then taped it into a large circle and put numbers on it. They walked around the circle to the "follow the yellow brick road" music and when the music stopped they stood on a number and whoever was on the number I picked out of a hat - won a prize (box of Animal crackers with lions and tigers and bears oh my on it )  We played pass the witch - The kids sat on the road in a circle and passed a stuffed witch around and when the music stopped whoever had the witch won a prize (glinda's magic bubbles to scare away the wicked witch ) I drew life size Dorothy, Tin man, Lion and Scarecrow and Glinda on poster board and we played pin the heart on Tinman and red glittery shoes on Dorothy. We also played pass the parcel an English game that I grew up with. You take an item and wrap it up about a dozen times (at least one wrap per child) Then you pass it around and when the music stops the child takes a wrapper off. I put a little sweet in each wrapper too.  Inside was some gummis and a huge bag of skittles(taste the rainbow) that went everywhere when they opened the last wrap. I had plastic bags on hand for them to pick them all up.  The kids loved this.  Food was Hotdogs, chips, corn on the cob, macaroni and fruit and vegetable tray. We had over thirty people including adults so It was easy to prepare. I put a blue gingham cloth on the table and had wizard of oz plates. I ordered cups but my son wanted juice boxes so the fork and napkin went into the cups. The cake was made by a friend, a yellow brick road on a green grassy cake leading up to a rainbow shaped (half a circle) on the end of a rectangle cake.  It was wonderful. I made all the characters from fondant and we sat them on the road.  The candles where on the rainbow. Goody bags where coloring sheets of wizard of oz characters tied up like a scroll, lolly pops, chocolate hearts, wizard of oz sticker book, I taped the CD and made covers for the tapes out of the invitations that arrived late - they looked fantastic, a rainbow slinky and a wizard of oz blow out. They also took home their wands , Animal crackers, bubbles and bag of skittles. We had a brilliant time, the party lasted an hour over schedule, nobody wanted to leave. They kept playing the games over and over. We spent quite little on this party, living abroad means using your imagination a little more as things are not so readily available (no party stores or anything). I purchased the cd, lots of posterboard and streamers, balloons and the goody bag stuff but that was about it. I did have lots of offers to organize future friends parties.
