My  three year old LOVES The Wizard of Oz.  She watches it every Saturday. She has practically memorized the whole thing. So, it just seemed natural to use The Wizard of Oz as the party theme for her third birthday.  We started out by downloading several pictures from the internet. We made our own invitation which read... We're going over the rainbow to celebrate ______'s third birthday!(outside) The inside read... Just follow the yellow brick road... Place, Time, etc. We bought several packs of primary colored plates (to represent the rainbow), rainbow colored cups, and lots of balloons.  (We filled the balloons with  helium from a portable tank that you can purchase at most big retail stores.) We decorated the tables with yellow table clothes and wicker baskets with balloons attached to them. When the children arrived we gave each a party hat. My husband is a mechanic and bought large funnels which we spray painted silver and added some elastic string.  The children were precious!!!  We played several games... 1. I made little witches brooms with toothpicks and yellow construction paper wrapped around the bottom to represent the "straw". I placed these in ice cube trays, filled with water and froze them.  At the party, I put one ice cube in a plastic zip bag and gave one to each child.  The object was to see who could "melt the witch"  first and recover the broomstick. They could try anything that they could think of to melt the ice.  FUN and CHEAP!!! 2. We bought large lollypops from an "online" store.  (to represent the lollypop guild) The children sat in a big circle and passed the lollypop around while music from the movie played. When the music stopped, the child holding the lollypop was out.  We played until only one child remained and that child got to keep the lollypop.  (We used several other lollypops to decorate the present table. We stuck them into large flower pots filled with rocks.) 3.  We also played pin the heart on the tinman.   We served hotdogs, chips, and cake. We made punch using lime sherbet and lemon/lime soda. But the best part was the cute witches hat floating on top.  (I used fun foam to create a hat.) The kids loved "Melted Witch Punch".     No party is complete without goodie bags. Again, I used pictures I downloaded from the internet. I covered a box of animal cookies with a picture of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and Tinman walking through the forest. We made a new label that read ... LIONS, TIGERS, AND BEARS.  Don't forget the TM Merry Old Land of Oz Bakery.  We also used an ideas from this site and made our own bubble labels.  Each child received on of each.   The party was a hit!!
