For my daughter's 7th birthday, we had a Around-the-World theme for her party. For invitations, I scanned an air-ticket sample from a travel textbook and printed out blank tickets which I wrote all the destinations we would be visiting just like a real ticket, complete with the "passenger's name". The cover of the "ticket" showed a world map and details about the party -- ETD and ETA of the plane. The party was held at our condo's function room, where we set up a long table with chairs for the 11 guests (all girls) and birthday girl. Next to the function room is a reading lounge where we use as "holding area" for early guests. We put up a signage which reads "BG International Airport". I prepared plastic "suitcases" (actually MD containers, complete with baggage tags and a passport for each child) When the mummies called to RSVP, I confirmed airline kids'meals and window seats for them. On the big day, when the kids arrived, each took a Polaroid picture and had it stuck to their passport. Then they busied themselves decorating their passports with stickers and markers in the holding area. When everyone had arrived, we announced the plane was ready for boarding. They each had their passports stamped for immigration clearance before boarding and then settled into their seats on the plane. We started the powerpoint slides using a projector which my husband prepared, showing them the first destination - Johannesburg, South Africa.  They played a game matching footprints given to them with some of the wild animals commonly found in Kruger National Park. All were given a small toy S. African animal as souvenir. Then we continued with the slides on next destination - Rome, Italy. We told them about and showed them pictures of Trevi Fountain. Then each of them were given an old coin and they went outside the function room where they tossed the coin into the fountain in the condo garden. All were given Italian bread sticks and Baci chocolates as souvenirs. Mealtime next on board the plane when we served them their kids' meals on compartmentalised disposable trays, just like on the plane. The prepared meals were pushed out on a trolley and served by my very helpful friend who doubled as photographer and flight attendant. Just as they finished eating, we continued with slides on next destination - Honolulu, Hawaii. The activity when they arrived in Hawaii, was to make a lei each. I had prepared strings and dried silk flowers for this activity. The lei was also the souvenir they would bring back from Hawaii. Then it was slides again on next destination - Tokyo, Japan. The children busied themselves with folding origami whales, which we flashed the instructions on the projector. For souvenir, we gave them each pack of popular Japanese snack known as YanYan and also an origami crane (a symbol of friendship) which was folded earlier. They were shown slides of next destination - Beijing, China. When they arrived, they made a panda each out of lunch bags. Again, we projected the instructions so they could follow. Souvenir was a pair of chopsticks each. Final destination - Sydney, Australia. The girls busied themselves with making Fairy Bread (white bread spread with butter and colourful sprinkles). For souvenir, they were given erasers with the Australian flag. The birthday cake in the shape of a world map was the next highlight. Apart from the candles, there were toothpick flags of all the countries "visited" placed on the cake. While waiting for parents to pick them up, my husband had made a large cardboard world map with names of the countries "visited" for the girls to pin on. They were given prizes for correctly pinning on. All the children has a great time and for the parents, they were pleased with the fact that their kids attended a party complete with Geography lesson.
