I am having an Asian Feast and Dress Up party later this month for my daughter's 7th Birthday.
The 9 guests were sent invitations that announced that they could dress up in Japanese, Chinese, other Asian or fun party clothes. Two of the girls have Asian Indian heritage and will come in saris; my daughter has a kimono which she loves to wear and a pair of flip flops! I'm waiting to see how the other girls turn out! Hopefully we will each get to talk about where our outfits come from, and about our various heritages! Although we are not Asian my daughter is facinated in these delightful cultures, and what a way to show it's a small world! My mom is going to bake a cake in the shape of a goldfish (koi) the day of the party. Since this is an Asian feast, we are going to serve egg rolls, rice, chicken on skewers, and shrimp tempura (I have a Thai friend who cooks.) My daughter's favorite food is white rice so believe it or not, this menu is her heart's delight. For an econical yet memorable activity, I am going to collect a bunch of old flower vases, beg fresh garden flowers such as roses and lillies from friends including a bunch of fresh bamboo, and do "flower arranging" so each girl brings home a vase of flowers as a party favor. EAch vase will be decorated with a ribbon. We will also do some party games such as "pin the koi in the pond" and the limbo using fresh bamboo! Another friend who happens to be an elementary school teacher from Hawaii is going to teach origami including animals and paper kimonos. I have purchased goody bags in the shapes of fans as well as little pretend Chinese food containers with chocolate fortune cookies. My daughter has decorated each container with koi stickers, and we stamped the tissue paper to go in the goody bags with Japanese themed stamps. Between now and the party, my daughter and I will make easy paper lanterns to decorate the party area. I found instructions on the internet which look pretty easy. I hope to get hold of some cheap paper fans for the girls to play with at the party; I have also gotten little paper parasols to decorate plain drinking cups and make them special.
