When my daughter turned 2, I threw an "It's a small world party" for her. All of the kids (ages 1 to 5) had to come dressed in an outfit from a country/ native costume. The computer and hand made invitations had "It's a small world after all..." across the top, the top part of the paper was cut into the shapes of various landmarks from around the world (The top of Big Ben, a Russian "onion" dome, the Eiffel tower spire, etc. ...following more or less the idea of the facade at the Small World ride in Disneyland)and it also featured silhouettes of kids holding hands across the bottom of it. There were about 15 kids, and everyone got into the spirit! We had an American cowgirl, a couple of Chinese girls, a couple of Sevillana (Spanish) dancers, an Arab sheik, a German leiderhosen, A Mexican Charro, a Hindu sari, and the birthday girl had a Japanese kimono outfit. The kids looked SOOOOO cute walking around in their outfits. The photos are adorable. I made a round cake and decorated it as a globe and inserted flags of several countries, for the flags I bought a couple of large world maps at teacher supply stores and cut out the little flags from there and attached them to toothpicks. I also used the maps also for decorations, cutting out countries, etc. I purchased a traditional round-shaped pinata and transformed it into a globe with the maps as well. I was lucky enough to find several beach balls with the globe on them and used those as centerpieces for the tables. The finger food was from different ethnicities as well - it's easy enough to pick an Italian dish, a Mexican dish, Chinese, etc. For favors, I found "It's a small world" beanbag dolls at the Disney store website-- they were not outrageously priced ($3 each)-- which I wrapped in cellophane tied with a ribbon that featured world flags in it (found at a crafts store) and each kid received this (no candy - the doll was enough!) This was an unforgettable party and I really enjoyed putting it together.
